Calculus 2  Math 2414 11WC

Summer 1 2024 online

Instructor:  Amanda Whisenant                    e-mail: awhisenant@hillcollege.edu

Textbook and Materials:

Calculus Early Transcendentals 3rd ed. Author Briggs WITH the online MyLab Math access

COURSE ID is: whisenant30528

The online access is required – it is the program that you will be submitting your work in, to purchase it:

1) from the Hill College bookstore as access code only

2) from the Hill College bookstore as access code bundled with a physical book

3) directly online from Pearson, you will put in the course ID, enter your information and then rather than entering the pre-purchased access code you will enter your credit/debit/PayPal info.

A calculator with log is required; I highly recommend the graphing calculators, the CAS calculators are not allowed

A computer with internet access is required to read the e-book and to complete the assignments.

Exams:  There are four regular/chapter tests, a midterm, and a comprehensive final exam.  I will drop the lowest of the four regular/chapter test grades.

The regular tests can be taken from anywhere you have an internet connection, the passwords for the tests are: test1, test2, test3, and test4; the passwords are just to prevent accidental opening of the timed test when you are not ready to start. The chapter exams are EXAMS and as such they should be done on the honor system *no cheating which means no use of books, notes, cell phones, other websites, etc* blank scratch paper and a non CAS calculator are allowed.  I am not requiring them to be proctored because of the added time/scheduling of proctoring exams.  Blank scratch paper, pen/pencil and a calculator that is not a CAS calculator are allowed on exams.

The midterm and final exam must be proctored, you have three options:

 1) Hill College has two testing centers that are free of charge to use *Note the hours by calling, they are practicing social distancing and you must make an appointment before you can take the test. One center is located at the campus in Hillsboro, TX and the other is located at the campus in Cleburne, TX,

254.659.7816 Cleburne and 817.760.5814 Hillsboro

2) Locate a college/university near you that proctors correspondence tests.  Most other school testing centers will change you a testing fee which you will be responsible for. You will need to let me know what college/university you choose and get me their testing center contact information so that I can get in contact with them to ensure that they follow the guidelines we require for testing – then I will get them the test information and you can take the exam at their location. **HIGH SCHOOLS MAY OFFER TEST PROCTORING FOR DUAL CREDIT STUDENTS

3) Online from your own computer *you must have a working web cam and mic* you can go to ProctorU.com, create an account, schedule your exam, and take it online from your computer. They will guide you through what is required software/hardware wise and will discuss payment options for their services.

Homework/Quizzes:  The homework/quizzes are study/learning/practice. They are graded individually to show you what you need to continue working on but do not count toward your course grade.

Grading System:  Regular Exams:  55%   Midterm Exam: 20%    Final Exam: 25%.

Grading Scale:    90-100 A,  80-89 B, 70-79 C, 60-69 D, 0-59 F

Academic Conduct:  Students guilty of academic dishonesty, cheating, or plagiarism in academic work shall be subject to disciplinary action.  If you are found to be cheating you will receive a grade of zero and if it occurs a second time you will automatically fail the course.

Calculus 2:  Suggested timeline for course

For chapter 1-7 which is Calculus 1 content I posted homework and review quizzes. If you feel that you need to review any of this material it is available for review (but is not for a grade).

For chapters 8, 10, 11, and 12 (this material is calculus 2) you may find it better to start with reading the book and working the homework assignments to help learn the material; however, if you have had some calculus 2 in the past you may want to start with the chapter quiz to see how much you remember.

The learning process that I recommend is:

  • Read through a chapter section in the e-book
  • Do the homework assignment for that chapter/section. Repeat for all sections in that chapter.
  • Take the chapter review quiz to see how much you have learned and if there are any topics/questions that you need to return to the homework practice to work on some more.
  • After you complete the chapter, take the Review Test for that chapter. Take it over and over until you are confident.
  • Take the test on that chapter and go back to step 1 (reading the book) for the next chapter

The homework assignments are indicated by blue circles and are set up as practice with unlimited attempts. Although a grade will appear when you complete a homework, it has no effect on your course grade.  Each question in the homework has in the upper right corner a "button/link" that says "Question Help", this is not available in the quiz or test formats which are designed as testing platforms.  The "Question Help" opens up the available options for that problem, they include "View an Example" in which you simply click next as each step appears worked out, "Show me How" which explains a step then prompts you to interact by entering the answer for that step, "Video" is available on most but not all questions and has a short video lecture explaining that type of problem, "Textbook" which takes you to the interactive textbook for that topic (you should be reading the text book for each section and reviewing their interactive examples prior to attempting the homework but I understand that this is not a perfect world and not everyone will do that which is why there is a quick link to the book on each question), "Ask My Instructor" this allows you to type a message that will be emailed directly to me – use this to ask anything you like and I will be able to see the exact problem you are sending it from, and there is also a "connect to tutor" option – Pearson provides you with one free session with their tutors and allows you to purchase more if you like their service.

The quizzes are indicated by orange squares, in the quizzes and tests tab "question help" is not available and it is designed to help you review the chapter to see if there are any topics/questions that you need to go over again. Although grades will appear for the quizzes they will not affect your grade in the course. The quizzes have unlimited number of attempts.

The tests are indicated by green diamond shapes.  There are review tests which do not affect your grade in the course but allow you to practice the material from the chapters included in the test, these tests are not timed and have unlimited number of attempts. The actual tests are timed (150 min) and password protected to prevent accidental opening (see testing section above for passwords).  If you experience a power outage or other technical difficulties email me as soon as possible and I will see what I can do to re-set the test.  There are four regular/chapter tests and I drop the lowest of those 4 regular/chapter test grades (I do not drop the midterm or final exam test grades).  ALL tests are to be taken without notes/books, the regular/chapter exams are done on the honor system but the midterm and final exams must be taken in the testing center.

Notes:

The student is solely responsible for:

♦ Completing each assignment by the specified due date.

♦ Utilizing, as needed all available study-aid options (including emailing with the instructor)  to resolve any questions that they might have regarding homework, course material, and/or technology projects.

♦ Giving as much of an effort as it takes to pass this course.

♦ All items contained in this syllabus are subject to change as the semester progresses.  Students will be notified in advance of any changes.
